Jampan is an archaic word that refers to a sedan chair carried by Native Asiatic bearers. It is also known as "palanquin," "litter," or "sedan." These synonyms also refer to a type of enclosed chair which is carried and used for transportation especially by dignitaries or royalty. The palanquin is a type of carrier that was more prevalent in ancient times and was a status symbol for those who could afford it. The litter and sedan are more commonly used today to refer to vehicles that are used for carrying people in a similar fashion. While the jampan may no longer be in use, its synonyms continue to be a part of everyday speech and language.
