Kalimantan is the Indonesian portion of the island of Borneo. It comprises four provinces, namely East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, and West Kalimantan. Synonyms for Kalimantan include Indonesian Borneo, Kaltara, Kalsel, Kaltim, and Kalbar. Indonesian Borneo encompasses the entire island of Borneo, but the term is often used interchangeably with Kalimantan. Kaltara stands for Kalimantan Utara, or North Kalimantan, which became the country's newest province in 2012. Kalsel is an abbreviation for Kalimantan Selatan, or South Kalimantan, while Kaltim refers to Kalimantan Timur, or East Kalimantan. Meanwhile, Kalbar stands for Kalimantan Barat, or West Kalimantan.
