Kuomintang is a political party in Taiwan, formerly known as the Chinese Nationalist Party. Synonyms for the name include KMT, Guomindang, GMD, Nationalist Party, and Chinese Reform Party. The Kuomintang was founded by Sun Yat-sen in 1912 and advocated the unification of China and the establishment of a democratic government. Under Chiang Kai-shek's leadership in the 1920s and 1930s, the party became authoritarian and fought against the Chinese Communist Party. The Kuomintang lost the Chinese Civil War to the Communists in 1949 and fled to Taiwan. Today, the Kuomintang remains a major political party in Taiwan, advocating for closer ties with China and conservative values.
