Locusta migratoria is a type of grasshopper that is also known as the African Migratory Locust or the North African Locust. This insect is commonly found in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia and is known for its tendency to swarm in large numbers, causing significant damage to crops and vegetation. Some synonyms for Locusta migratoria include the Desert Locust, Tree Grasshopper, and Moroccan Locust. Other species of locusts are often referred to as Schistocerca, Oedaleus, and Chorthippus. Despite the damage they can cause, locusts also play an important role in their ecosystems as a food source for many animals.
