Neandertals, also spelled as Neanderthals, were a prehistoric species of humans that lived in Europe and West Asia during the Pleistocene epoch. There are several synonyms for the word Neandertal that can be used to refer to this ancient human species. Some commonly used synonyms include Neanderthalensis, Homo neanderthalensis, Neander and Neandertaler. These terms are often used interchangeably to describe this extinct species. While Neandertals are often portrayed as brutish and less intelligent than modern humans, recent studies have shown that they were highly skilled hunters and used tools and technology that was advanced for their time.
