Oil palm is a type of palm tree that is widely cultivated in tropical regions for the production of palm oil. There are various synonyms for the word "oil palm," including African oil palm, Guinea palm, palmiste and dura palm. The African oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) is the most widely grown oil palm species while the dura palm (Elaeis oleifera) is also grown but less commonly. The Guinea palm (Elaeis guineensis) is often referred to as the true oil palm as it produces high-quality oil. The term "palmiste" is used to refer to the kernels of the oil palm fruit which are also used for the production of oil.
