Ramsay Hunt syndrome type I is a condition that affects the facial nerve and causes symptoms such as facial weakness, ear pain, and a rash in the ear canal or on the face. It is also known as herpes zoster oticus or herpes oticus. Other possible synonyms for this condition may include varicella-zoster virus otitis externa, geniculate neuralgia, and facial nerve palsy. Although the symptoms of Ramsay Hunt syndrome type I can be similar to those of Bell's palsy, which is also a condition that affects the facial nerve, Ramsay Hunt syndrome type I is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox and shingles. Treatment may involve antiviral medications, pain relievers, and physical therapy.
