A saltpan, also known as a salt flat or salt lake, is an area of land where salt is extracted from saltwater or brine. In some regions, salinas, salt mines, or salt pans are used to refer to these areas. Salt evaporation ponds, salt fields, and salt marshes are also synonyms for saltpan. These locations are commonly found in arid or semi-arid regions, where there is little rainfall and high temperatures that allow water to evaporate, leaving behind salt. Saltpans have been used for thousands of years for salt production, and they continue to be a vital resource in many parts of the world.
