Saurischia is a term that refers to a group of dinosaurs that have a special hip structure. This group consists of two subgroups, the theropods and the sauropods. There are several synonyms that can be used for saurischia such as lizard-hipped dinosaurs, the reptile-hipped dinosaurs or simply saurischian. The term saurischia comes from the Greek words sauros meaning lizard and ischion meaning hip. This term was first coined in 1888 by the American paleontologist Othniel Charles Marsh. The saurischian dinosaurs were diverse and included some of the largest and most well-known dinosaurs such as the Tyrannosaurus rex and the Brontosaurus.
