Sickle cell disorder, also known as sickle cell disease, is a hereditary blood condition that affects the shape of red blood cells. These cells are normally round and flexible, but in people with sickle cell disorder, they become stiff and take on a crescent or sickle shape. This can cause blockages in blood vessels, leading to pain and organ damage. Synonyms for sickle cell disorder include sickle cell anemia, sickle cell trait, hemoglobin SS disease, sickling disorder, and sickle cell syndromes. While there is currently no cure for sickle cell disorder, treatments such as blood transfusions and medication can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life for those with the condition.
