Sri Lankan farmers' kidney disease, also known as chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) or agrochemical-related chronic kidney disease (CKDnT), is a debilitating condition affecting agricultural workers in Sri Lanka. The disease is characterized by a gradual loss of kidney function and leads to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Other possible synonyms for CKDu are agricultural nephropathy, farming-associated nephropathy, and chronic interstitial nephritis. The exact cause of the disease remains unknown, but it has been linked to exposure to agrochemicals, heat stress, dehydration, and malnutrition. There is an urgent need for research and preventive measures to address this public health crisis affecting thousands of farmers in Sri Lanka.
