Thylacine, also known as the Tasmanian tiger or Tasmanian wolf, is a carnivorous marsupial native to mainland Australia and Tasmania that went extinct in the 20th century. Other possible synonyms for thylacine include marsupial wolf, Tasmanian hyena, and striped wolf. Thylacines were large and muscular animals, with distinctive stripes running down their backs, and powerful jaws with sharp teeth used to hunt prey. Despite their nickname, Tasmanian tigers were not related to real tigers, but instead were part of a unique group of marsupials that once roamed Australia. Sadly, hunting, trapping, and habitat loss led to the extinction of this remarkable animal.
