Trench fever is a bacterial disease that was first described during World War I. It is transmitted by body lice and causes a range of symptoms including high fever, headache, muscle pain, and fatigue. Although trench fever is not common today, there are several synonyms that can be used to describe this disease. These include quintan fever, shinbone fever, and Wolhynia fever. Each of these names is derived from different aspects of the disease, such as the frequency of fever spikes (quintan), the pain in the shins that can occur (shinbone), and the region in Ukraine where the disease was first identified (Wolhynia).
