Herpes is a highly stigmatized and pervasive sexually transmitted infection (STI). It is caused by the herpes simplex virus and is characterized by the development of painful sores on the mouth or genital region. There are many synonyms for herpes, including "cold sores," "fever blisters," and "oral herpes" for the sores that develop on the mouth, and "genital herpes," "herpes simplex 2," and "HSV-2" for the sores that develop in the genital region. Unfortunately, many people are often ashamed or embarrassed to talk about their herpes diagnosis due to the social stigma attached to the condition. However, it is important to recognize that herpes is a common and manageable infection that can be effectively treated with medication.
