Loaiasis is a rare parasitic disease caused by the Loa loa nematode worm. Some common synonyms for Loaiasis are Loa loa infection, African eye worm disease, and Calabar swelling. The disease is endemic to rainforest regions of Central and West Africa, especially in Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, and Angola. The main symptoms of the disease are subcutaneous swelling, itching, and eye pain, which can progress to serious complications such as blindness. Although Loaiasis is not usually fatal, it can significantly impact the quality of life of infected individuals. Effective diagnosis, prevention, and treatment strategies are crucial to managing this neglected tropical disease.
