West Indian smallpox, also known as variola minor or Alastrim, is a viral disease caused by the variola virus. It was endemic in the Caribbean islands and parts of South America, and was particularly prevalent among indigenous populations. Some synonyms for West Indian smallpox include Caribbean smallpox, Brazilian smallpox, Venezuelan smallpox, and Andean smallpox. Despite being less severe than its more deadly counterpart, smallpox (variola major), West Indian smallpox still caused significant morbidity and mortality, particularly in children. With the introduction of the smallpox vaccine in the early 20th century, the disease was eventually eradicated globally in 1980.
