Bishkek is the capital city of Kyrgyzstan. The city is also known as Pishpek, Frunze, and Biškek. The first name, Pishpek, was given to the city in 1825 when it was established as a fortress by the Khanate of Kokand. Frunze was the name of the city from 1926 to 1991, in honor of Mikhail Frunze - a Bolshevik military commander who was born in Kyrgyzstan. The name Bishkek was adopted after the country gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
