The common water snake is a non-venomous species of snake that is found all across North America. This snake is often referred to as the Northern water snake due to its distribution in the northern parts of the continent. The common water snake is also known by several other names, such as the banded water snake, water pilot, and spotted water snake. Despite their different names, all of these common water snake species share the same physical characteristics such as their olive-brown color and dark crossbands on their back. All of these synonyms describe the same snake species and are often used interchangeably by people who are familiar with them.
