Labia minora, also known as inner labia, form a part of the female external genitals. The term labia minora describes the delicate, hairless skin folds that protect the vaginal opening. It surrounds the clitoris, urethra, and vaginal opening. Synonyms for labia minora include nymphs, inner lips, and vaginal lips. The word "nymphs" comes from Greek mythology where they were described as maiden goddesses who lived in forests and waterways. Inner lips also refers to how the labia minora are located within the larger labia majora. Vaginal lips describe the area's shape and function while "labia libera" is a medical synonym for this often-misunderstood body part.
