Nepeta is a genus of plants in the family Lamiaceae, also known as catmints. The word "nepeta" originates from the Etruscan city of Nepete, where the plant was first discovered. Despite being commonly referred to as catmints, nepeta plants have a range of synonyms such as catnips, field balm, and ground ivy. Nepeta cataria, the most common species, is also known as catnip, catwort, or catrup. Nepeta racemosa, another species, is known as meadow catmint, catmint, or dwarf catnip. Nepeta sibirica, or Siberian catmint, is another species that is often used in landscaping and gardening.
