Schistosoma is a parasitic flatworm that causes the debilitating disease schistosomiasis. This worm is commonly referred to as a blood fluke due to its long, flat body shape. Synonyms for schistosoma include Bilharzia, a term coined after German physician Theodor Bilharz who first discovered the parasite, and also known as S. mansoni, S. haematobium, and S. japonicum depending on the species responsible for causing the infection. Other names for this pathogen include snail fever, bilharziosis, or just simply schisto. While schistosomiasis is a major health concern in many countries, continued research is being conducted to find better treatments and prevention methods for this disease.
