Bangladesh, the country in South Asia, has several synonyms that have been used over time. Some of these include Bengal, East Bengal, and East Pakistan. Bengal has historical significance as it was once a prosperous region that included modern-day Bangladesh and West Bengal in India. The term East Bengal was used before the partition of India to denote the eastern province of Bengal. East Pakistan came into being after the partition of India in 1947 when Pakistan was created as a separate country. In 1971, East Pakistan gained independence from Pakistan and became Bangladesh. Despite the change in name, the synonyms for Bangladesh are still used by some.
