Spina bifida is a condition that affects the spinal cord and brainstem. Commonly referred to as a neural tube defect, spina bifida can cause significant developmental and physical disabilities. Other synonyms for spina bifida include myelomeningocele, spina bifida occulta, and meningocele. Myelomeningocele is the most severe form of spina bifida where the spinal cord and nerve roots protrude from the back. Spina bifida occulta is a milder form where the spinal cord and nerves remain inside the spine, but there may be a small dimple or patch of hair on the back.
