Ablate is a technical term used in medicine to refer to the removal or destruction of tissue. However, there are several other alternatives to say ablate such as eradicate, obliterate, eliminate, excise, abscise, cut off and trim down that can be used in a more general sense. All of these words imply removing or cutting away something unwanted or unnecessary. For example, eradicate suggests removing completely, while obliterate suggests destroying so completely that nothing remains. Eliminate is to remove or get rid of something undesirable or unnecessary. Cut off implies cutting something from the main body, while abscise means separating a plant part naturally and usually along an anatomical line. Trim down suggests cutting to size or making leaner.
